Families living with specially abled kids have a lifestyle that is accompanied with its own unique set of challenges. Unlike many years ago, where children with disabilities like cerebral palsy, paraplegia, autism, down’s syndrome and more were not able to lead fulfilled lives, the scenario today hasd changed. There is widespread awareness and understanding about these conditions that is enabling professionals and families provide a normal, active life for these kids. Parents and other family members can ensure that they create a secure and safe atmosphere around which their lives can be built.

1. Self Awareness
It is important for you as parents to learn and understand as much as you can about your child’s disability, both from a medical as well as psychological point of view. Many parents make the mistake of approaching their child’s disability with a negative mindset, sometimes even believing that the condition is a repercussion of some past mistakes. This thinking reflects in their behavior and ultimately on the child. Treat and love your specially abled child just like you would any of your other children.

2. Professional Expertise
Throughout the development of your child it is important to seek consultation from a reputed and trusted medical expert who you can trust with the well being of your child. Preferably, stick to a single medical practitioner so that he or she is able to build a healthy rapport with him or her. Familiar faces make things easier in such situations. Be sure to follow up on all appointments and medicinal administration wherever applicable.

3. Schooling
Before selecting a school for your child it is important to thoroughly research schools that provide special education. Check their syllabus, content, faculty, facilities, amenities and location. Remember, every child is unique and has special needs. The school that you enroll your child into should have the expertise and people to deal with his or her condition. Speak to parents of other children in the school for feedback and wherever possible speak to the children as well. Firsthand accounts are often the best sources of insight.

4. Social Dynamics
Encourage your child to mix around with other children. This will facilitate self development, confidence and motivation. Some parents have the tendency to be overprotective and shield the child from the world. Isolation is very unhealthy. Your child’s life will be as normal as you treat it. For this, having a set of friends to bond and play with helps.

5. Support System
Build a robust emotional and physical support system for your child. This should ideally involve other family members both core and extended. Begin with empowering them with the knowledge about the disability along with how and what role they play in the life of the child. In the case where there are other children in the house, guide them to be sensitive towards your specially abled child so that he or she does not feel socially awkward in certain situations.
