Nurturing Values

How Nurturing Values Is Crucial To Living?

Saturday, February 25, 2012 17:40:50 IST

It is common to value material things like clothes, jewelry, the latest digital gadgets, swank cars and the like. Apart from this you are also aware of intangible realities such as honesty, acceptance, health, beauty, desire, loyalty and sacrifice.

These are things which you consider important in life and which dictate how you will behave, perform and live throughout your limited period on earth. They are values without which you would be rudderless in your journey, your life scattered and meaningless.

For instance you enjoy your house and other material possessions. Another person, who is completely devoid of a value system breaks into your home and steals your possessions in addition to wrecking your interior decoration. This is where nurturing values takes on significance in the life of every individual if existence is to be peaceful and safe.

Home Is Where Nurturing Starts

While nurturing values is not limited only to children, it is the ideal stage where basic values are fostered with love, maturity and understanding. This can only be achieved by parents who themselves have adhered to a workable value system and are able to conduct their own life with assuredness and balance.

The young child learns from his parents how to behave, what to eat, how to dress, what to think and what to prioritize as he grows. If parents set a bad example by keeping a messy, noisy home where frequent brawls and slanging matches go on, these will be conditioned into the child.

Cleanliness, neatness, courtesy to elders and peers, obedience and discipline are values which begin at home and must be instilled in your child. Creating a calm and peaceful atmosphere in his home environment goes a long way in nurturing values in your toddler.

Make it a secure haven which is free of distractions and in sync with his developing psyche. You will be rewarded with a caring, responsible and compassionate human when he reaches adulthood.

The environment matters:

The place where you live, your immediate surroundings and neighbors also mold the values of your child. Clean, spacious surroundings, preferably with a park for children to play in contribute to your child’s health. Roads have to be crossed and this is a good time to teach your tiny one how to navigate busy traffic.

Appropriate neighbors make your child socially apt and build confidence. He also learns values like open-heartedness, tolerance, discernment and sensitivity. Thus a healthy environment stimulates your child, nurturing values which empower him to be independent and strong.

A school that emphasizes value-based learning and education:

Based on modern approaches to education, the accent is on meaningfulness and purpose in a student’s development even as he is trained in academics. Here too the focus is on nurturing values which arm your child with the proper tools to grow into a helpful and ideal citizen of the state. Investigate the behavior and morale of the head teacher and staff. Are they geared to handle this challenging task?

Make sure the environs of the school are friendly and peaceful as well as purposeful. The accent should be on actualizing and preserving beneficial relationships. A school which nurtures values will encourage the child to think for himself. Such a school stresses care for the self and others and the creation of educated, civil and loving human beings.
