Should we take Extra Curricular Activity as a Vocation or Career? |

There are people who just can’t limit their choices to the traditional career paths. They are those who believe in walking on the roads which others do not care to consider. To great deal, extra-curricular activities taken up during school or college are often taken up as vocation in later stages of life. Often what starts as a youngsters whim, leads to a profession and inspiration in life. Several renowned artists from various fields of arts have actually grown on love for one or the other extracurricular activity.
In fact great many of extracurricular activities can actually be taken up as future profession. Until recent past, these were looked as juts activities other then studies. But increasingly they are being looked up as window to identify hidden talents among students. Educational institutions are trying their best and provide as many choices as possible. This helps the student identify their area of interest.
What is needed to turn extracurricular into profession? Though it is the current trend but it requires special traits to develop an extracurricular activity into career. Firstly one has to excel in the activity. Though several students take up similar activities but only few succeed in creating a profession out of it. Though it is not always required that one has to have talent of a genius but can succeed through continuous perseverance. Continuous practice even after one cross the boundaries of school and college is the key to accomplishment. And lastly, one need to have complete faith on one’s chosen field.
Which activities can be taken up as vocation? Many extracurricular activities can actually qualify to become a full time vocation. Other can be taken up as par time professions. Here are some activities which are often turned into vocation by several people.
Photography- Photography as art form has expanded tremendously. Unlike the past century, the present one has offered tremendous scope in form of digital photography. Photo editing is one of the most important avenues for the new age photography. Besides photographers have played instrumental role in developing various schools of photography. Wild life photography, photojournalism, portraits etc are just the beginning of varied kinds of photography. No wonder more and more educational institutions are offering photography courses as extracurricular activity. Students interested in the field can take up these courses and develop it further to turn it into a profession in later years of life. The best part of it is that it can always stay with one as hobby and can be taken up as profession at any point of time.
Pottery Design- Students with creative bent of mind will always be interested in pottery design. Though traditionally it has been ethnic art form but increasingly it is being looked upon as an urban choice. Though people have cultivated it as hobby, impressively some have taken a step forward and developed it as profession. They hold exhibitions and cater to customers of various tastes and preferences.
Like the above mentioned examples there are various other extracurricular activities which have the potential of being lucrative career options. Radio and Video Jockeying, creative writing, freelance journalism, and language translators are some examples to end with. |
