Getting an Idea
Let us begin with a basic question. What is it that affects a person’s behaviour? The so called conservatives will say it is the culture, the rich will say it is the economic stability and the extent to which the person has lived a comfortable life. Another section will say it is the opportunities that a person has got in life till date to prove himself. And there will be a never ending thread of discussion until someone tosses a term on which everyone will agree, VALUES.
The term has such a great enigma in it that it can direct the views to a particular direction and rest all the other discussion. But it goes without saying that majority of the people doesn’t have an idea about values except for the dictionary meaning of the term. A popular dictionary describes the term values as ‘Important and enduring beliefs or ideals shared by the members of a culture about what is good or desirable and what is not. Values exert major influence on the behavior of an individual and serve as broad guidelines in all situations.
Every class & section of the society has some values. The parents have their family values, companies have their values and missions defined for the common good of the organisation, governments have values aimed that welfare of the citizens. It’s the values that drive everyone around. So the question arises that arise today is how to pass on the values and nurture them so that they are not only preserved but are also respected & applied.
Value delivery process starts from the day the child starts coming to sense. Throughout his life he will meet various parties who will inculcate some kind of values in him and expect him to keep them in mind while doing any work. But often this process creates conflicting interests in mind of a person who has the directives of many parties. So, nurturing values just doesn’t mean burdening a beautiful mind with a heap load of literature that your legacy has been carrying on for decades. It actually means providing the person with a reliable source of information which is modified with the changing environment so that the person can tackle all the difficulties without defeating the integrity of any of the values.
Winston Churchill, the former Prime Minister of England had to take a decision to free India when it was not at all in favour of the England. But it is a set of modifying values that sees the interests of all over personal interests. A heap stack of old and hard lined values will never lead to victory for an individual. Rather it will be a source of confusion, deprivation and constant conflicts of interests.
As parents nurture those values which will help the individual to grow up with integrity, as an organisation nurture those values which will make individual proud to be associated with you and won’t ever give him a chance to behave unethically and as a human being give values that make person respect for humanity. Then we will see a changed world! |
